Guinea Pig Sanctuary

Welcome to my little guinea pig sanctuary and micro-rescue adoption project. At Sevenoaks Piggies, we believe every guinea pig deserves a loving home and a happy life.

As a sanctuary and micro-rescue, we are dedicated to providing a safe haven for guinea pigs in need and matching them with caring families who will cherish them forever. Our Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome guinea pigs in need. We strive to educate the community about proper guinea pig care and promote the well-being of these adorable creatures. Through our sanctuary and adoption program, we aim to reduce the number of neglected guinea pigs and provide a loving environment for those in our care. Our sanctuary is a haven for guinea pigs who have been abandoned, neglected, or surrendered. We provide them with spacious, comfortable accommodation, nutrition, and treatments to ensure their health and happiness. We socialise and bond with each guinea pig, giving them the love and attention they deserve.

How to look after little piggies

What size enclosure do they need?

It’s best to provide a spacious cage, as big as you can manage safely. As a guide 6ft by 2ft on a single level would be advised. Avoid multi-level cages, as they can restrict movement and discourage natural behaviours.

Indoor or outdoors?

In the UK, we’d advise that either set up is suitable for the warmer months of the year. Regardless of where you house your piggies, you'll need to make sure they're safe from wildlife, other pets and extreme temperatures (both very cold and very hot climates can be dangerous!)

What do piggies eat?

Hay makes up the majority of a guinea pig’s diet. Followed by fresh vegetables (peppers are packed full of vitamin C!) and guinea pig pellets to ensure they’re getting a sufficient amount of nutrients. Grass and herbs are also a lovely treat for piggies.

What bedding should they have?

Guinea pigs have delicate respiratory systems, paws and skin. Protect your piggy by avoiding wood shavings or sawdust as bedding. Safe bedding includes Megazorb, Fitch, Carefresh, fleece liners, or Vetbed. Also provide plenty of hay for foraging and playing.

What toys will my pigs enjoy?

Guinea pigs are really playful and their unique personalities are often overlooked. They enjoy exploring, so change up the middle of their enclosure with tubes or pipes and little houses. You could also scatter a small amount of treats around their enclosure to encourage them to forage.

What else should I know?

It’s really important that you research guinea pig care and understand their needs before providing piggies a home. Guinea pigs are demanding pets. They shouldn’t be solely looked after by a child. Guinea pigs need cleaning out every day and they may require veterinary care occasionally. Like any pet, they are a big responsibility!

Ready to adopt?

The Sevenoaks Piggies micro-rescue adoption program connects guinea pigs in need with loving forever homes. We will screen potential adopters to ensure they are committed to providing a suitable home for their new furry friend.

Our adoption process includes education on guinea pig care, compatibility assessments, and ongoing support to help both the guinea pig and their new family thrive.
